To “use your voice” in business is to advocate for the clients you really want to help.
And to “be authentic” is to validate them…by finally showing up as yourself.
I have a lot of patience, and I’m known for my kindness, so people never suspect I trained as a child to be a secret operative – I learned early to rapidly scan the emotional landscape in a room. To step over the tripwire. To diffuse the bomb ticking down in someone’s head in 3, 2, 1….
Kaboom…I also learned to withstand the blast.
But to do that, I had to initiate my First Mission in early youth: Seek out backup. I found people I admired and trusted – adults with values that made sense to me. To be around them made me better. And their expectations for me became my own.
My Second Mission: Rise up. At eighteen I entered the dental industry and over the course of thirty years I’ve worked for a large insurance corporation, then managed a highly profitable practice. Then I hopped to the other side of the desk into a software startup working the tradeshow circuit and speaking to groups. From there I transitioned into coaching, where I later coached others on how to lead from an authentic place.
My professional life was the perfect place to sharpen all my earlier learned instincts. But instead of just an ability to detect a threat, I honed my abilities to detect people’s sincere struggles and most empowering assets.
I could read what they really wanted out of work, their colleagues, and their clients. I could track where confidence was lacking. Uncover valuable information people needed to move forward. Expose people to their own strengths. See the masks they were unintentionally wearing…
… and sense when attempts to stand out were draining them of their abilities to shine through.
Mission three: Use my business to advocate for women in their businesses. Develop marketing solutions that make having an online presence feel empowering, not debilitating. Find out what would really make work meaningful…
